Microsoft is working to change that with a new Windows 11 feature designed to make your laptop battery last longer.
It’s called adaptive energy saver, and it could be a real game-changer for business users.
Until now, Windows has only switched on energy saver mode when your battery level dropped to a certain percentage. You could set that threshold yourself, but the system was still reactive rather than proactive.
Adaptive energy saver works differently. Instead of waiting for your battery to run low, it constantly monitors how you’re using your device. If you’re carrying out lighter tasks such as browsing the web, replying to emails, or writing in Word, Windows automatically enables energy saver quietly in the background.
Unlike older power-saving modes, this feature doesn’t dim your display. Instead, it focuses on reducing the workload of major power-hungry components like your processor and graphics chip when they’re not needed. By easing the strain on these parts, your laptop could run for much longer before you need to reach for a charger.
For now, adaptive energy saver won’t be switched on automatically. You’ll need to activate it manually in your system settings.
It’s still being tested in Microsoft’s Canary channel, where experimental features are trialled before being released to all users. There’s no guarantee it will make it to the final version of Windows 11, but the potential benefits make it worth watching closely.
